Derek Imschweiler, Director of Program Management and NPI at Cinch Connectivity Solutions, was recently featured in Power Systems Design for his article "What's the Difference Between Traditional and Single Pair Ethernet?" In it, Imschweiler explains where traditional four-pair Ethernet and Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) each fit best.
Traditional Ethernet is reliable up to 100 meters and can exceed 10 Gb, which suits high-volume enterprise, office, and data center traffic. By contrast, SPE under IEEE 802.3cg delivers 10 Mbps over distances up to 1,000 meters, and Power over Data Line (PoDL) can supply up to 52 W over the same pair. Imschweiler also notes that SPE's single-pair design is far less prone to crosstalk, and that its smaller, lighter connectors can save more than 50 percent of panel and PCB space. His comments look ahead to SPE's growing role in building automation, the Internet of Things, and zonal architectures for electric vehicles, where lighter, more compact cabling can reduce harness weight and complexity.
